Ministry St. Clare's Hospital in Weston is looking for two casual Respiratory Therapists to join their experienced Respiratory team. Position Summary: This position is held by a Respiratory Therapist who possesses the knowledge and skill to administer all forms of respiratory assistance and treatment responsibilities assigned to the Department of Respiratory Therapy Services. A therapist may function as a resource person in all patient care areas, and has frequent contact with patients often critical in nature.
They will participate on the Code Blue (resuscitation) team, Rapid Response Team, formulate patient care plans, and perform various invasive procedures. Respiratory Therapists are required to exercise independent judgment in many tasks. Respiratory Therapists will be required to perform EKGs for inpatients and outpatients in the Emergency Department, if available. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 1.
Adult Ventilation a. Provide continuous mechanical ventilation for adult patients. b. Provides ventilatory support for patients that need to be transported throughout the medical complex.
c. Provides non-invasive positive pressure ventilation and CPAP as indicated. 2. Pediatric Ventilation a.
Provides initial ventilatory support for patients that need to be transferred to another facility for ongoing care. b. Provides non-invasive positive pressure ventilation and CPAP as indicated. 3.
Neonatal Ventilation a. Provides initial ventilatory support for patients that need to be transferred to another facility for ongoing care. b. Provides CPAP as indicated.
4. Intermittent Treatments for Adults a. Must be able to assess the disease process of the patient and modify the therapy accordingly. b.
Administer aerosolized medications, provide hyperinflation and bronchial hygiene therapy. These include, but are not limited to, vibratory therapy, EZPAP, chest physiotherapy (CPT), incentive spirometry (IS) and chest vest therapy. Assess effectiveness of therapy and recognize and report variances or questionable applications. 5.
Intermittent Treatments for Pediatrics a. Must be able to assess the disease process of the patient and modify the therapy accordingly. b. Administer aerosolized medications, provide hyperinflation and bronchial hygiene therapy.
These include, but are not limited to, vibratory therapy, EZPAP, chest physiotherapy (CPT), incentive spirometry (IS) and chest vest therapy. Assess effectiveness of therapy and recognize and report variances or questionable applications. 6. Intermittent Treatments for Neonatal Patients a.
Administer aerosolized medications, hyperinflation and bronchial hygiene therapy. b. Assess effectiveness of therapy and recognize and report variances or questionable applications. 7.
Patient Monitoring a. Perform continuous monitoring of patients such as oxygen saturation analysis, end tidal CO2 analysis, blood gas analysis and other monitoring. b. Perform apnea/bradycardia monitoring including trend/event recording.
8. Patient Education a. Provide patient education such as smoking cessation, asthma education, discharge instruction and other education as indicated. 9.
Oxygen Rounds a. Perform oxygen therapy, using knowledge of indications and benefits of all types of equipment. Recognizes, rectifies, and reports improper applications. Implement the oxygen therapy protocol.
b. Perform high humidity and aerosol therapy. c. Perform routine patient surveillance and equipment inspection to insure proper use and functioning of that equipment.
d. Process for reuse, equipment and supplies that are cleaned in the department; deliver reusable supplies and equipment to Central Service for sterilization; pick-up clean equipment. 10. Diagnostics a.
Assist with inpatient bronchoscopy b. Perform bedside pulmonary function screenings for diagnostic purposes. c. Perform bedside spontaneous parameters, i.e.
vital capacity, tidal volume, negative inspiratory force and rapid shallow breathing index. d. Perform EKGs for inpatients and outpatients in the Emergency Department, if available. 11.
Patient Care Procedures a. Perform arterial blood gases (ABG) punctures b. Perform advanced cardiac life support as a member of the Code Blue team and Rapid Response Team. c.
Perform specialty gas therapy, such as heliox therapy. d. Perform arterial blood gases (ABG) analysis. 12.
Patient Care Documentation a. Provide complete documentation in the computerized medical record of all respiratory assessments and care provided. Performs written documentation as indicated. b.
Formulate patient care plans in collaboration with other multi-disciplinary team members. 13. Department Documentation and Paperwork a. Complete all departmental paperwork, computer entries and patient charges necessary for day-to-day operation.
14. Communication Regarding Patient Care a. Communicate verbally to nursing staff or other ancillary staff any pertinent patient care information. b.
Participate in Patient Care Rounds. c. Provide a complete verbal report to incoming shift regarding respiratory care being provided to all patients. d.
Communicate to physician any recommendation of change in therapeutic regime and documents any physician orders in the electronic medical record. 15. Teamwork/Communication a. Communicate timely with the department manager any problems or unusual occurrences.
b. Pull new orders from the computer system, when assigned, and carry out or communicate to the appropriate person. c. Perform other duties and responsibilities in keeping with overall department and hospital goals and objectives.
d. Utilizes free time to complete extra duties, such as helping co-workers or cleaning equipment. 16. Safety and Infection Control a.
Adhere to department and hospital policies and procedures regarding safety standards. b. Adhere to department and hospital policies and procedures regarding infection control procedures. 17.
Employee Education/Development a. View educational videos or CD's b. Attend departmental meetings or read and initial all minutes form missed departmental meeting. c.
Complete competencies in required time frames. d. Attend new equipment inservices or arranges a make-up session. 18.
Other a. Under certain circumstances, may need to replace a patients tracheostomy tube. b. May conduct drug urine screening and breath alcohol testing (BAT).
Qualifications Graduate or eligible to graduate within 6 months from a 2 year, Associate Degree Respiratory Therapy program approved by the Council of Medical Education of the American Medical Association Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner in the State of Wisconsin Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care (Need to obtain within 2 years of hire) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required (able toobtain upon hire) ACLS, NRP, and PALSrequired within 2 years of hire.
