Position Details:
36 hours per week

Shifts: Variable Shifts; Primarily Day/Pm Coverage for nights to cover team members vacation on occasion

Weekends: Every other

Holidays: Rotating

Other duties include:

  • Answers incoming telephone calls and pager messages, assesses the purpose and needs of the caller, and then either fulfills those needs or appropriately forwards the call to another person.Prepares non-sterile medications for pharmacist check.
  • Preparation activities include selection of the correct drug, dose, route form and amount, repackaging of medications, compounding non-sterile products, label preparation and attachment, but not the performance of sterile compounding processes.
  • Distributes checked medications to patient care areas, including bedside delivery, automated dispensing cabinets, delivery via pneumatic tube or dumbwaiter, and all other delivery methods as appropriate to the pharmacy department at the local facility.
  • Fills, removes, and outdates automated dispensing cabinets with medications, including controlled substances, and infusion fluids according to daily stocking reports, new orders, and stock-out alerts.
  • Triages operational problems with automated dispensing cabinets.
  • Issues approved stock items to areas with non-automated storage, as requested on established forms.
  • Returns unused and unneeded medications and infusion fluids to pharmacy, evaluates returned medications for reusability, and places reusable items back into the storage and distribution system.
  • Maintains medication stock levels for manual distribution areas, including monthly documented check for outdated products, storage cleanliness and neatness.
  • Processes or prepares outpatient prescriptions.
  • Inventory management (receive incoming shipments of pharmaceuticals, batch selection of medications from central inventory for patient care stock replenishment, fill stock orders for non-automated care areas and remote facilities), including management of controlled substance products and records
  • Assists with orientation and training, especially Pharmacy Techncian duties, for newly hired personnel, students and observers.
  • Participates in process improvement and quality initiatives within the department.
  • Age-Specific Competence: The Pharmacy Technician is familiar with alternative non-sterile dosage forms, routes and packaging, such as oral liquids in oral syringes, to facilitate medication administration for neonatal, pediatric, geriatric and other patient types that may not be able to take tablets and capsules. Considers patient age and development when preparing medications and dosages for dispensing.
  • Adheres to all Ministry Health Care confidentiality policies and procedures.
Qualifications

Education: High school graduation or equivalent is required

Experience: Required experience is either 1) a formal pharmacy technician training program of at least 9 months duration that includes at least 160 documented hours of on-the-job learning experience in a pharmacy (hospital and/or retail), or 2) at least 1 year of recent, successful employment at a job requiring repetitive accuracy, trust, efficiency and communication skills

Experience: Successful employment in a pharmacy is preferred, especially a hospital inpatient pharmacy with unit dose distribution

Certification: Current certification as a pharmacy technician (CPhT) is preferred but not required
