The employee selected will serve a six (6) month trial period. This posting will be used to fill similar vacancies that occur within three months of the closing date.
Hours: This is a full-time, 38 3/4 hours per week, 38 weeks per year position, Monday â" Friday: 8:15am â" 4:30pm.
Flexible as needed with evening and weekend hours required. Schedule is subject to change by the supervisor.
Organizational Function and Responsibilities:
This position establishes and maintains a safe, developmentally appropriate and nurturing learning environment according to program educational philosophy. This position plans and facilitates developmentally appropriate activities as part of a comprehensive program for childrenâs physical, cognitive, social and emotional growth, so children can reach their highest potential. This position regularly supports and encourages family participation in center activities and o! ngoing communications, provides families with child developmen! t resources and information etc.
This position reports to the Manager, Child and Family Center.
Essential Duties:
The following are duties typically expected of this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
1. Ensures the safety and physical well-being of the children. Meets and maintains center compliance with all regulatory requirements; including state licensing requirements, city accreditation standards, USDA food program regulations, Wisconsin Early Learning Standards. Madison School District 4-K program standards and Madison College policies.
2. Plans and facilitates a consistent high quality educational program and care, learning environment and developmentally appropriate educational activities for the 4-year-old kindergarten program; Develops and prepares lesson plans on a weekly and long range basis, with sufficient detail to be useful to substit! ute teachers.
3. Plans and directs childrenâs activities throughout the day; maintains consistent limits; informs families of childâs progress on a daily basis.
4. Arranges the child centered learning environment and materials for childrenâs comfort and successful participation in the program.
5. Communicates daily with parents/guardians about their childâs day in a supportive positive manner.
6. Plans and organizes at least two (2) family events to invite families to spend time in their childâs classroom every month.
7. Develops a newsletter for families at least once a month.
8. Observes and records childrenâs progress on a daily basis. Individualizes programming according to childrenâs needs.
9. Completes focused portfolios and creative curriculum assessment tools for every child in his/her classroom and conducts at least one parent/teacher conference each semester.
10. Ensures the clas! sroom environment and playground are safe, clean, culturally and develo! pmentally appropriate for the children. Promotes a multicultural and anti-bias approach to learning and to the center environment. Shows respect for each family and childâs culture and background and their personal uniqueness.
11. Oversees housekeeping procedures within the classroom and in common areas. Monitors center sanitation procedures and promptly report any maintenance concerns to the manager. Maintains orderliness of the center as a whole, including the playground, gym, and storage areas.
12. Maintains childrenâs files and keeps them up to date to make sure state licensing requirements are met.
13. Conducts fire and tornado drills during the first week of every month and maintains fire and safety checklist.
14. Trains, supervises and evaluates student teachers, student and casual employees; Assists manager with conducting orientations for the new staff members.
15. Participates in staff meetings, attends conferences,! workshops, in-service and other training to meet state licensing, city accreditation and DPI requirements.
16. Communicates positively and effectively with co-workers; assists in the planning of the Centerâs future.
17. Checks quantity and conditions of supplies and equipment. Orders classroom supplies within budget; reports faulty equipment to the manager.
18. Administers medication authorized by parents and maintains accurate records related to the administration of such medication.
19. Assists the manager in planning and implementing family workshops / events, staff and family orientations and coordinating / facilitating center staff meetings/trainings.
20. DisseminDisseminates enrollment paperwork to families in the absence of the manager.
21. Demonstrates a commitment to the college values of excellence, respect and integrity.
22. Maintains a professional, positive working atmosphere and confidentiality ! of information in relation to staff, children and families.
23! . In absence of the manager, addresses parent concerns, initiates established processes, eases the situation. Calls, updates and hands off concerns to the manager as necessary.
24. In the absence of the manager, serves as contact for the state licensor and city accreditor.
25. Meets with the manager to share concerns and provide on-going updates.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. Physical stamina and ability to lift 50 pounds minimum.
2. Ability to relate and communicate positively with children, parents/guardians, student teachers, staff members and with the community and to provide leadership within a team-teaching model.
3. Skill in written and oral communications.
4. Ability to communicate (oral and written) in Spanish preferred.
4. Skill in communications and human relations with populations having diverse socio-economic and racial backgrounds.
5. Skill in planning and implementing early! childhood and 4-year-old kindergarten curriculum.
6. Trained in Shaken Baby Syndrome and certified in pediatric first aid / CPR . Meets requirements of Wisconsin Licensing Rules for Group Daycare Centers ( HFS 46) for physical exam and criminal background check.
Qualifications:
1. Bachelorâs degree in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education and/or
Special Education with a Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction ( WDPI ) license to teach pre-K through 3rd or 6th grade.
2. Two years (4,000 hours) experience teaching young children (2â"7 years old) in early childhood settings. Experience in teaching 4-year-old kindergarten program preferred.
3. Experience working with minority children and their families.
