Advanced Practice Nurse

Provides primary or specialty health care services within defined ! scope of practice in collaboration with a licensed physician and in accordance with MCW/FMLH/CHW policies and procedures. Department Position Purpose

Collaborate with a physician or physician team to assess and treat the acute and chronic health care needs of complex and critically ill or injured children. Rely on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. A wide degree of creativity and autonomy is expected. Provide instruction (both formal and informal) to parents, students, nurses, residents, and other health care professionals. Support section research activities and quality improvement initiatives.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Performs comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive and psychosocial status.

2. Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests.

3. Develops pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.

4. ! Monitors effectiveness of plan of care.

5. Educates p! atients on disease and treatment plans.

6. Performs procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.

7. Documents within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.

8. Collaborates and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.

9. Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.

Department Specific Responsibilities

1. Patient Care: Examine, treat, and document acute and chronic care of children with complex and critical health conditions in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Order, interpret, and record results of clinical tests and report results to physician team. Prescribe medications and make recommendations for other therapeutic treatments.

2. Teaching/Education: Instruction (formal and/or informal) of nurses and nursing students! , medical students, residents, parents and other health care professionals.

3. Quality improvement: Participate in quality improvement initiatives.

4. Research: Participate in section research activities.

Qualifications

MINIMUM POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education Requirements

Advanced Practice Nurse

(appropriate education and experience may be substituted on equivalent basis)

Master’s Degree in Nursing plus Acute Care Pediatric certification. Or Primary Care Pediatrics certification and current enrollment in an Acute Care PNP program with anticipated completion within 6 months of hire.

Experience

  • 2 years of experience in direct patient care for children, with proven ability to communicate well with children, parents, and physicians under frequently stressful circumstances.
  • Preferred: Previous experience in critical care nursing; previous experience as a ! Nurse Practitioner with subspecialty concentration in acute/chronic or ! critical care; previous experience with technology-dependent children.
  • Familiarity with advanced concepts, practices, and procedures within pediatric critical care medicine.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem solving, and attentiveness to detail required. Ability to communicate clearly and logically both verbally and in writing. Demonstrate accuracy and an attention to detail. Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical audiences clearly and concisely. Demonstrated high level of analytical ability to resolve complex patient care problems, administrative problems, and research issues. Interpersonal skills which frequently involve collaborating with, bedside nurses, peers and supervisors, physicians, and administrators on policy and procedural issues.

  • Wisconsin RN license
  • Wisconsin Advance Practice Nurse Prescriber License
  • Wisconsin Advance Practice Nurse Certification • Current BLS & PALS certification.
