The Student Echo/Vascular sonographer will report directly to the Supervisor of the Echo/Vascular laboratory. The student! will work with and under the direction of a Registered Echo or Registered Vascular Diagnostic Specialist. The student sonographer will perform a variety of non-invasive studies as appropriate. The results of these examinations are used to direct the course of patient care. This position requires direction from a Registered Echo/Vascular Diagnostic Specialist with advanced knowledge of cardiac and peripheral vascular anatomy, physiology, and disease.

The student performs clinical examinations on adults and occasionally on adolescents and pediatric age groups. The examinations are predominately performed in the HVC Non-Invasive Diagnostic Testing Laboratory and include portable examinations, which are done on inpatient units when the patient cannot be transported to the lab, the cath lab, outpatient sites at East and West Clinic locations. The incumbent has daily contact with professionals and families, both inside and outside the hospital setting.

The stud! ent may encounter difficult problems related to examination ev! aluations on a daily basis, and must resolve them with supervision. The incumbent is able to assist with transesophageal echo, dobutamine stress examinations, as well as, peripheral non-invasive testing, carotid and transcranial duplex, aorta, and renal duplex scans.

The student may also participate in clinical research, and acts as a clinical resource for other staff.

Qualifications

Education:
Minimum- Current student in the UW HC School of Diagnostic Medical Sonograghy.

Licenses & Certifications:
Minimum-Current CPR certification.

Work Experience:
Minimum- At least six months to one year as a student in the UWHC School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography with passing clinical evaluations and grades.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
Able to perform echo and vascular ultrasound studies appropriate for their level of schooling.
Ability to recognize cardiac and periphe! ral vascular pathology in order for the physician to render a diagnosis.
Excellent communication and customer service skills.
Ability to maintain composure under stress, using tact and good judgment.
Analytical decision making skills necessary to quickly assess and resolve technical and patient care problems and issues.
Strong interpersonal skills in relating to medical and hospital staff.

Physical Requirements:
Light: Ability to lift up to 20 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Even though the weight lifted may only be a negligible amount, a job is in this category when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree.

Work Schedule

Typical hours M-F 8am-4:30pm for 5weeks. Hours may vary depending on the needs of the department.
