- Receiving, sorting and procuring specimens from a variety of patients (newborn, pediatric and/or adult) according to established protocol, priority and processing guidelines. Ensuring that specimens are properly labeled and suitable for testing. Ensuring completion of specimen collection functions according to protocol. Packaging and tracking specimens for transport.
- Ensuring patient safety and assessing patient reactions to specimen procurement. Obtaining medical assistance when judged necessary.
- Verifying patient identification in accordance with established protocol. Resolving specimen identification and/or requisition problems and clarifying requests.
- Performing limited testing under established department (i.e. CLIA ’88) guidelines. Ordering and verifying test requests.
- Ensuring that specimens are properly labeled and suitable for testing. Resolving specimen identification and/or requisition problems and clarifying requests.
- Assisting in improving the quality and efficiency of laboratory procedures, policies and processes. Maintaining current knowledge of and complying with the contents of all pertinent policy and procedure manuals.
- Documenting appropriate information for quality assurance/improvement according to established protocol.
- Generating and distributing reports.
- Assisting with inventory and maintaining supplies and/or equipment. General Qualifications · Knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform this job are typically acquired through one year of progressively responsible experience in phlebotomy.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Demonstrated basic typing skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Desired Qualifications · Frequently lifts up to 10 lbs. Occasionally lifts up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to sit, stand, walk, bend and twist the majority of the workday.
- May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, and/or infectious agents. Will be exposed to human blood and body fluids. Must wear appropriate lab coat, gloves, gowns and eye and face protection as needed.
- Must be able to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
- May require occasional travel, therefore may be exposed to inclement weather and adverse road conditions.
- Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
